Why not make a cute, crawly caterpillar from your SMARTIES FUNNY FACES® Cake Mix? He looks great arranged down the middle of the table – or you could curl him round the plate.
Have fun!

Crawly Caterpillar
You will need
- 1 SMARTIES FUNNY FACES® Cake Mix
- Naturally coloured sugar strands
- Natural colour for the icing – I used some Mango Coulis: you can find it in supermarkets
Children should be supervised by an adult.
This recipe makes approximately 24 mini cakes.
For information on guideline daily amounts please click here.

Method
1. Bake the cupcakes as directed on the packet.
2. Once the cakes are cool, prepare the icing. Add a couple of teaspoons of the mango coulis, or use a food colour, and then mix well with a little water, added drop by drop, until the icing is runny but not watery.
3. To make the head: take two of the cakes out of their paper cases and trim the bottoms a little. Using a little icing, stick the two together with their top sides outwards, then spread one side with icing. Stick on eyes, mouth and antennae (the eyebrows!). Add a Mini SMARTIES nose, then leave to harden a little until firm (Pic 1). Meanwhile, spread the icing onto all the other cakes.
4. Stick the head onto one of the cakes in an upright position. Sprinkle the other cakes with a few sugar strands and decorate with the remaining SMARTIES.
You can also make a longer, smaller caterpillar (the mix will make 24 mini cakes). You’ll need some mini muffin cases and a mini muffin tray. Mix and bake the cakes as usual, but they’ll only need 10-12 minutes to cook. Decorate him as before – if you like the idea of a pink caterpillar like mine, use blackcurrant coulis instead of the mango – and I used the moustache cut in half for his antennae! (Pic 2)
