It's a shame that so many people are scared of spiders – I've always really liked them (so of course it's always me who has to rescue them out of the bath, or catch Daddy Long Legs and other creepy crawlies and put them out of the window). But it's traditional to involve them in Hallowe'en, so this month I've turned a couple of packs of SMARTIES Funny Faces into some very un-scary spiders. I think their SMARTIES eyes make them look kinda cute...
Hallowe'en Spiders
You will need
- 1 (or more) packs of SMARTIES Funny Face cupcake mix
- About 50g dark chocolate per mix (chocolate chips are best)
- You'll also need a piping bag – I used a disposable paper one. (You can get the bags and chocolate chips from my website if you can't find them)
Children should be supervised
by an adult.
This recipe makes approximately 12 cakes

Method
1. Make up and ice the cup cakes as directed on the packet. You won't need the Funny Face plaques - save them to use another day.
2. Melt the chocolate in a heatproof basin over hot water, or in the microwave (in my microwave it takes about 2-3 minutes: keep checking and stirring until it's melted, as you mustn't let it get too hot).
3. Pour the chocolate into the piping bag fitted with a no. 1 nozzle or, if it's a paper one, snip a tiny bit off the end so you have a small hole. Pipe a spider body and eight legs onto each cake. Use a small dab of chocolate to stick two SMARTIES eyes onto each, then add chocolate pupils. Allow to dry and set.
