Get the little ones to choose their favourite colours for the DIY paper lanterns. And once finished, they can be in charge of finding the perfect place in the house or in the garden to hand them.

Lantern craft for kids step-by-step

  1. 1

Cut 16cm x 10cm rectangle from SMARTIES®  sharing Block Paper Packaging & cover the back of the packaging in glue.

  2. 2

Stick coloured paper to the back, carefully cutting excess paper off.

  3. 3

Along the long edge of the paper, measure 1.5cm in from the side.

  4. 4

Repeat on the opposite edge, and join together with a ruler.

  5. 5

Cut along line and put strip of paper to one side. (This will become the handle later on).

  6. 6

Fold the rest of the paper in half along the long edge, with the colour paper showing on the outside of the fold.

  7. 7

Keep the paper folded, and along the short ‘free’ edge, measure 1.5cm from the side. Repeat on the opposite edge, and join together with a ruler.

  8. 8

Draw 10 lines across the width of the paper with 1cm between each line.

  9. 9

Cut along each of the 10 lines from the folded edge, stopping at the dividing line at the top. Unfold paper with the coloured paper side facing up, and glue along one long edge.

  10. 10

Stick the long edges together and use clothes pegs to hold in place & leave to dry.

  11. 11

When dry, push down on the top and bottom of the lantern to create the shape, and pinch along the folds to make it hold.

  12. 12

Take the strip of paper you cut off earlier, and add glue to each end.

  13. 13

Stick each end of the strip inside the top of the lantern to create a loop.

  14. 14

Hang the lantern alone or in a group using string.
